*ANSI/RESNA standard WC19 Wheelchairs Used as Seats in Motor Vehicles is a voluntary industry standard that establishes minimum design and performance requirements for wheelchairs that are occupied by users traveling in motor vehicles. One of the most important design requirements of the standard is for the wheelchair to provide four specific attachment points that facilitate proper and effective securement of the wheelchair facing forward in vehicles using a four-point, strap-type tiedown that complies with SAE J2249 Wheelchair Tiedown and Occupant Restraint Systems for Use in Motor Vehicles. The wheelchair must be successfully crash tested in a 30-mph, 20-g frontal sled test using these securement points. In addition, since May 2002, WC19 requires that wheelchairs be crash tested with a wheelchair-anchored pelvic safety belt. This belt connects to a vehicle-anchored shoulder belt, thereby offering the user a potentially better fit of the pelvic belt with reduced interference of personal space by another individual. The last column of the table indicates whether a wheelchair was crash tested with and is available with a wheelchair-anchored pelvic belt. Some products are listed even though not fully compliant with this provision of WC19 because these wheelchairs have been sucessfully crash-tested and provide 4 securement points which improves passenger protection.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose if the Convaid Metro Transit Stroller is the right for me?
The Metro stroller features a 30 degree fixed seat back. This means the seat back does not recline but the fixed tilt provides a comfortable position for the user but upright enough to where they can see everything in front of them. The 30-degree tilt provides increased comfort and support for children, older teens and adults who lack upper body strength and trunk control.

What is the user cannot sit up on their own and has poor trunk control?
A shoulder harness or lateral supports may be needed provide the user with better trunk positioning, you may wish to look at the Convaid Cruiser Transit Classic, Convaid Cruiser Transit, or Trotter Mobility Pushchair Transit Stroller. These models offer a variety of trunk support options.

Does the Metro have an option for a shoulder harness?
No, the Metro stroller is our economical umbrella stroller. It does feature a 2-point and 3-point seat belt. If a shoulder harness is needed, you may wish to look at the Convaid Cruiser Transit Classic, Convaid Cruiser Transit, or Trotter Mobility Pushchair Transit Stroller.

Can I order a sun canopy for the Metro Stroller?
Sorry, currently there is no sunshade available for this model.

What is the transit model stroller and how is it different from the basic stroller?
A transit stroller or transit wheelchair means that they are WC19 Bus Transit ready and can be occupied while traveling in a properly equipped bus or van. WC19 Wheelchair Safety Standard is a voluntary standard, which improves the safety and security of your child when seated in their wheelchair aboard a school bus or van. Their safety and security applies to all aspects of transportation, but particularly in the event of a vehicle crash. The transit model includes a crash tested frame, hold down brackets, headrest extension, a 3-point positioning belt with depth adjustable crotch strap, and foot positioners.

How do I determine which size stroller to purchase?
Refer to our Sizing Chart under the Specifications tab. You will need to focus on the seat depth, seat width, seat back height, seat to footrest, and weight capacity. The user's thighs should be slightly spread apart. The proper seat width measurement is decided by taking the widest point between the hips and the knees when sitting comfortably and adding about 1 to 2 inches for comfort and growth. For help with measuring and fitting the user, use our Measurement Chart or contact one of our seating specialists at 877-664-4565.

If I have the user’s overall height or weight, will that be enough in determining the correct size?
No. And the reason for this is that every user is built differently, it is always best to refer to the Sizing Chart on the Specifications tab. For example, if you have a user who is tall and skinny and doesn’t weigh much, they may still need to be in a larger chair due to their overall length. This is why we recommend completing the Measurement Chart and reviewing those measurements against the Sizing Chart. This will also help in selecting a stroller that will allow for growing room as well.

    Fitting Guide
Convaid’s lightweight, folding chairs are designed to be more than just a convenient chair. Order the correct size chair by first determining the user’s height, weight and seating measurements. Properly-fitted, Convaid chairs will provide years of comfortable use. As your child grows, refer back to this Fitting Guide to adjust the dimensions of the chair.

Correct seating and positioning encourages good posture, which in turn aids circulation, breathing and digestion. Please take the time to properly adjust the chair to fit the user. If the user is not correctly positioned, check the accessories section of this manual to see if one or more of our accessories would help to facilitate posture or consult your physical therapist. Improper seating can create problems with posture. Please consult your child’s physical therapist or doctor for additional guidance.
