ToniCross Tricycles are made in France. These special needs tricycles have been specifically designed for children with developmental disabilities from 2 1/2 years of age through adolescence. The stability, ease of peddling and optional adaptations make these tricycles both workable and fun for a wide range of children with various degrees of disability.
ToniCross Tricycles have a wide base and low center of gravity to aid stability and security. The 8 year old boy with cerebral palsy can pedal and steer the ToniCross Tricycle independently even though he is unable to walk without the assistance of a walker.
These tricycles are chain driven from a rear wheel which places the foot pedals directly under the seat. This provides leverage points for easier motion compared to other chain drive tricycles. The tricycle's chain drive is fixed (pedals rotate as the wheels rotate), not the freewheeling coaster type. Hand brakes allow quick braking and the ability to move the tricycle backward by peddling backward. Good hand control and moderate strength is necessary for effective braking.
Three sizes of ToniCross Tricycles are available for children from 2 1/2 years to an adolescent. The seat and handlebar height is adjustable, the hand brake fits right or left side, and the front wheel turning radius is limited for safety and secure balance.
- Small size ToniCross Tricycle is 45" in total length end-to-end (from tire-to-tire) and 24" wide.
- Medium size ToniCross Tricycle is 49" in total length end-to-end (from tire-to-tire) and 26" wide.
- Large size ToniCross Tricycle is 55" in total length end-to-end (from tire-to-tire) and 30" wide.
- Both the Small and Medium sizes roll on 15.5" wheels.
- The Large ToniCross Tricycle roll on 20" wheels.
- Supports up to 180 pounds.
Note: All of the tricycle accessories are interchangeable between the three different sized tricycles.
Optional back support provides additional pelvic and trunk support. It can be placed low around the pelvis or high around the thorax to provide needed support. Two units can be placed on the same upright to provide additional pelvic and trunk support. We suggest cutting off the post height once the support is in place, for greater safety.
